Let’s Explore Postpartum Care Around The World

We invite you to explore postpartum recovery traditions from around the world.

At Borne, we believe in the power of holistic postpartum care and have been inspired by many cultural and historical postpartum practices that we now weave into our support at Borne.

Currently in Australia, Postpartum care is very underwhelming and that is exactly why we started Borne.

Our mission is to provide new mothers and their families with the support, care, and celebration they deserve during this transformative time. Each example offers unique insights and practices that contribute to a mother's well-being.

Korea

Did you know that 85% of Korean mothers stay at a Postpartum Recovery Centre after giving Birth?

These facilities, known as "sanhujoriwons," offer a range of services including specialized meals, massages, and 24/7 newborn care, ensuring mothers can fully rest and recover in a supportive environment.

China

In China, the "sitting the month," is a well-known postpartum practice.

New mothers are encouraged to stay indoors, rest, and follow a specific Chinese diet and take Chinese Medicine to restore their health. The diet includes warming foods, herbal soups, red date tea and chicken broths designed to replenish energy and promote healing.

India

The First Forty Days

In India, the first forty days after birth, known as the "confinement period," are considered crucial for the mother's recovery. During this time, new mothers follow a special diet rich in healing spices and herbs, receive regular massages, and are encouraged to rest. This period focuses on physical and emotional rejuvenation.

Mexico

Mexican culture celebrates "La Cuarentena," a forty-day postpartum period

During these 40 days, new mothers receive extensive care. Family and friends often assist with cooking, cleaning, and baby care, allowing the mother to focus on healing. Traditional practices include belly binding and consuming nutrient-dense foods.

Nigeria

Omugwo

In Nigeria, the Igbo tradition of Omugwo involves the new mother's mother or mother-in-law moving in to provide support. This includes cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the baby, giving the new mother time to rest and recover. Omugwo emphasizes community and familial support as key components of postpartum care.

The United States

A rapidly emerging service is appearing

In the United States, luxury postpartum retreats are a hugely emerging offering. Boram in NYC and Post Pamper in San Diego provide comprehensive care for new mothers. These facilities offer services such as personalised nutrition plans, spa treatments, and professional baby care, drawing inspiration from global postpartum traditions to create a nurturing and luxurious experience.

Borne

By exploring these global postpartum care traditions, we can better appreciate the diverse ways cultures support new mothers. At Borne, we integrate these insights to provide exceptional care and support during the postpartum period, ensuring that every mother feels nurtured and empowered.
Did you know that you can opt for a Chinese Confinement element into your stay at Borne?
